Warm Chicken

Here’s the most ridiculously technology overloaded chicken coop door opener. Just how much stuff can we use? Its not to make the project more complicated, its to learn about more of the wonderful tools available to all makers, inventors and engineers worldwide.

Custom circuit board, WiFi, Arduino, Raspberry Pi, 3D modeling, 3D printing, motor control, solar powered, JSON over TCP, MeteorJS, mongodb, redis, bootstrap, responsive and reactive browser dashboard on a 2.8″ TFT display. All this replaces a piece of string. Sound ridiculous? well it is.

Be a Part of the First Western Colorado Regional Startup Weekend!

Grand Junction, Mountain Village, Telluride and Montrose have teamed up to host a region-wide Startup Weekend for entrepreneurs, developers and designers in Western Colorado! This is the first regional Startup Weekend in Western Colorado, and everyone is invited. This collaboration is built upon the belief that we’re better together, and is the first of many regional events to come.

If you have an idea for a new tech startup that you’d like to see, or even if you don’t know what you’d create, but you want to be a part of something amazing, register today! We promise, this will be an event you do not want to miss. Nothing quite compares to the experience of creating a viable company—not to mention lasting relationships—in one weekend.

RPI2, TFT, Redis, Meteor, YouTube Demo

Here’s a performance demo I worked on this morning.

One Man’s Junk…

My son-in-law found a MagniSight Explorer in some free box and gave it to me. This is perfect for surface mount board work, well except its analog 480p video is horrible by today’s standards. So I added a $35 Raspberry Pi 2 and a $26 Raspberry Pi Camera Module for crystal clear 1080P/30 video and 5 megapixel images.

3d-scanning for Custom Shoes!

The TechLab crew is pushing the limits of technology in hopes of bringing footwear comfort to one of our local members.
Last week Nathan helped us create a 3D computer model of a very large (Size 14, 5E width) human foot using an xBox Kinect and some special software called “Scanect”.

By taking images of our subject’s feet from all angles, Nathan was able to create a 3D Model that we printed in plastic using our TAZ4 3D Printer!

In the near future, we hope to work with Sense Of Motion Footwear (they make shoes right here in Montrose) to create a custom “last” that can be used to make custom shoes that match our members foot exactly, allowing them a level of comfort that they cannot find by ordering or buying shoes from a store!

Craig now has a functional garage workbench.

Project Waterdog

I started Project Waterdog as part of Welcome Home Montrose’s Mission No Barriers 2015. Waterdog uses exist technology to enable visually impaired kayakers access to the Montrose Water Sports Park.

Here’s my introduction video.

Behind-the-scenes – Film Festival control room

Habitat for Humanity of the San Juans recently hosted a film festival  jam-packed with outdoor activities, dance parties, and a large selection of unique films – most with direct ties to the local area.

I (Chuck) was fortunate to have the opportunity to manage the technical production for film screening events at the historic Fox Cinema Center right here in Montrose!
